Types of Sinking Funds

Date: Oct 19, 2026

Sinking funds generally fall into a few types: funds for predictable bills, funds for repairs and replacements, funds for planned goals, and funds for celebrations or giving. Which types you need depends on your situation.

Main Types of Sinking Funds

  • Bill funds cover costs that come once or twice a year, such as insurance, memberships, or annual subscriptions.
  • Maintenance and replacement funds cover items that wear out, such as tires, appliances, phones, or computers.
  • Health funds cover deductibles, co-pays, prescriptions, dental work, or glasses.
  • Long-term financial goal funds build toward a larger purchase, such as travel, a move, or a car.
  • Celebration and giving funds cover holidays, birthdays, weddings, or donations.

Choosing One To Start

Estimate the total cost, decide when you need the money, and divide by the number of months. For example, a $240 phone-replacement goal in 12 months is $20 a month.

You can keep each fund in a separate savings account, or track them as labeled lines in one account. Either approach works. Choose the one you will actually check. If money is tight, start with one small fund for the expense that worries you most.
