How To Get An Itemized Receipt

Date: Oct 16, 2026
The easiest way to get an itemized receipt is to ask for one at the time of purchase. If the cashier or server doesn’t give you one automatically, ask for it before you leave. If you’ve already left, you can usually ask the seller to reprint or resend it.
Ask At Checkout
Here are the steps you can take:
- Ask “Could I have an itemized receipt?” before you pay or as the transaction finishes
- If you only receive a card slip or a total, ask for the full receipt that lists each item
If you’d rather not carry paper, ask for an emailed or texted copy.
If You’ve Already Left The Merchant
- Check your email, the store’s app, or your online account’s order history. Many sellers store receipts there.
- Use the store’s receipt lookup tool, if it has one. Walmart’s, for example, asks for the store location, purchase date, receipt total, and the card type and last four digits.
- Contact customer service. Most retailers can search recent card transactions and reprint a receipt.
- At a restaurant, ask staff to reprint the check or send an itemized version. Some point-of-sale systems can search by check number, card digits, date, and total.
Details To Have Ready
- Date and approximate time of purchase
- Total amount
- Payment method and last four digits of the card
- Store location or website
If you can’t get a receipt, a bank or card statement can confirm the date, amount, and merchant. It won’t list the items. Some returns, reimbursements, or expense reports require an itemized receipt, so check what yours needs.
