How to See Your Total Debt Load

Date: Oct 21, 2026
You can see your total debt load by combining your credit report balances with any debts that may not appear there, then adding them up.
Start With Your Credit Reports
You can view reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion for free; however, make sure to only use the official site. Reports from these providers list open accounts, balances, limits, and payment history.
Check Other Sources
Some debts may not appear. Check lender accounts, statements, or online portals for loans, and look for federal student loan or tax balances in their own accounts. Add money owed for medical bills and unpaid utilities. Only some unpaid bills will show on credit reports, usually after going to collections.
List each debt with its balance and monthly payment. For example, $3,000 on credit cards, $9,500 on a car loan, and $400 in medical bills makes a total of $12,900. Update the list monthly so it stays useful.
Seeing the full number may be uncomfortable, but it’s also the starting point for any plan, and knowing it gives you more options.
