How To Monitor Your Total Debt Easily

Date: Oct 20, 2026

The easiest way to monitor your total debt is to keep one simple list and update it monthly, backed by regular credit report checks.

Build A One-Page List

Write down each debt, its balance, minimum payment, interest rate, and due date. Add the balances for a total. A notebook or basic spreadsheet is enough to keep track of these amounts.

Use Your Credit Reports

Credit reports track your credit accounts and balances. You can view your reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Use them to catch accounts you forgot or do not recognize.

Federal student loan balances and tax balances may be listed in their own online accounts rather than on all credit reports, so check those separately if they apply.

Some free apps and credit monitoring services also display balances in one place. However, read their privacy policies before linking your accounts.

Make It A Habit

Pick a regular day, such as the day you pay your largest bill. Update balances, then compare the new total with last month’s total.

For example, if your total moves from $5,400 to $5,250, you can see that $150 of progress towards pay down debt without any complicated tools.

Whatever your approach, keep it simple. A basic list you update monthly is often all you need to regularly monitor your debt.
