How to Know What Debt You Owe

Date: Oct 23, 2026

You can know what debt you owe by checking your credit reports, lender accounts, and any notices you have received.

Start With Credit Reports

Free reports are available weekly from each of the three major bureaus: Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. They list your accounts, balances, and creditor names.

Confirm With the Source

Log in to each lender’s site or call the number on your statement to confirm the current balance. A report may be a few weeks out of date.

Some obligations may not appear. Unpaid utility bills show up only if they reach collections. Check for debts such as taxes, student loans, or medical bills in their respective systems.
