How to Check Your Debt

How to Check Your Debt

Date: Oct 21, 2026

To check your debt, pull your free credit reports and compare them with your own statements. This shows what you owe and who you owe it to.

Get Your Reports

Visit the websites for Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. You can see reports from all three major credit bureaus for free. Review each account’s balance, limit, and payment status.

Check Beyond the Reports

A report may not show everything. Look at loan lender portals, paper statements from credits, and bank statements. If you have federal student loans or tax debt, check those accounts separately. Unpaid bills, such as utilities, usually only appear after a collection agency gets involved.

Sort debts by balance and interest rate when you finish. That makes the next step clearer, whether it is paying more on one account or contacting a creditor about options.

Once you have all of your balances together, write them down and track and update your total owing amount as balances change.
