How Often Should I Figure Out How Much Debt I Still Have?

Date: Oct 20, 2026

Check your total debt about once a month, with a deeper review every few months. There is no required schedule, so choose a pace that is realistic for you.

A Simple Routine

  • Monthly: Add up current balances when you pay bills. A short list is enough.
  • Every few months: Pull your credit reports and compare them with your list. You can view reports from each of the three major bureaus for free once a week at AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • After a big change: Recheck after a job change, a new loan, a missed payment, or a settlement.

Credit reports show open accounts, balances, credit limits, and payment history, making them useful for a cross-check. Keep in mind, they may not show every obligation, so it may be helpful to check multiple sources.

Keep Things Manageable

If checking feels stressful, schedule it for the same day as a regular bill. Write down each balance, the minimum payment, and the interest rate.

For example, checking your debt, you may have three balances of $1,200, $800, and $450, adding up to $2,450. Next month, compare the new total. Consider a drop of any amount as progress.

If you are behind on payments, check more often so you can act early and contact creditors about options.
