How Do I Find Out All My Debts?

Date: Oct 23, 2026
You can find out all your debt by checking credit reports first, then reviewing statements, mail, and lender accounts for anything missing.
Start With Your Credit Report
View your credit report at Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Credit reports cover credit accounts, balances, and payment history. Debts you share with another person, such as a joint account, will appear on your report as well.
Start with the reports, then use your own records to confirm and complete the picture.
Check Other Records
Next, check your own records for items not on the reports: federal student loan accounts, tax balances, and medical bills. Review your mail for collection letters, as well as your bank and card statements for recurring payments to lenders. Unpaid cable or utility bills typically appear only if sent to collections.
Combine Into One List
Record each debt, balance, rate, and payment. Total everything on one list.
For example:
- Card: $900
- Auto loan: $7,000
- Medical: $250
- Total: $8,150
One master list, updated monthly, makes your debts easier to manage. Keep notes on anything you cannot verify.
