How to Check if You Have Debt

Date: Oct 21, 2026
To check if you have debt, review your free credit reports, bank statements, and mail. Most credit accounts will show up on a report.
Where to Look
You can view reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion for free. They list open and closed accounts, balances, and payment history. If you find no accounts, you likely have no credit-based debt reported.
Other Places to Check
Some debts do not show on reports. Unpaid utility or cable bills usually appear only if sent to collections. Medical bills, tax balances, and personal loans may be tracked elsewhere. Look through old mail and email for notices and statements with owing balances.
