How to Check How Much Debt You Have

Date: Oct 22, 2026
To check how much debt you have, collect balances from your credit reports and your lender accounts, then add them together.
Pull the Balances
Start with your free reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Credit reports track your credit accounts and current balances.
Add It Up
Write each debt on a list: lender, balance, interest rate, and minimum payment. Include debts that may not show on reports, like money owed for medical bills.
For example:
- Credit card: $1,800
- Student loan: $14,000
- Medical bill: $350
- Total: $16,150
Balances change daily with interest, so the number is a snapshot. Check the lender’s site for the current payoff amount if you plan to pay a loan off. Update the list monthly to track progress.
Knowing the number lets you decide on a plan, whether that means paying extra on one account or asking a lender about hardship options.
