"Budgets Do Not Work"

Date: Oct 21, 2026
Budgets can fail when they are too rigid, leave out irregular costs, or assume income that varies. That reflects the method, not you.
Why a Budget May Not Work
- It doesn’t factor in irregular costs, such as repairs or annual bills
- It is built on income that changes month to month
- It allows no flexibility for daily life
- Essential costs exceed income, which a budget alone cannot fix
A budget is simply a plan for money. If basics cost more than you earn, the answer may involve income, assistance, or lower bills, not tighter tracking.
Try a Simpler Approach
- Track only your top four or five categories.
- Use sinking funds for predictable irregular costs.
- Budget from your lowest likely income if pay varies.
- Review one big bill at a time, such as cable, which often can be negotiated.
- Leave a small buffer for things you cannot predict.
Try one small change for a month and then adjust. A budget that fits your life will work better than a strict one you abandon.
